Why would you do that????

My mother-in-law from America has been over for the last couple of weeks. Although living in Ohio for many years her family history is from the South. Every now and then she will give me a little insight in to some of the customs of that part of the country - like what they serve for breakfast: biscuits and red-eye gravy.

The "biscuits" I can cope with. Think a lighter, fluffy/flaky bread roll, a bit like a plain scone but less dense. (Nothing like a chocolate digestive biscuit). Served with the biscuit is some bacon. Ok so far. All this is topped with red-eye gravy. Here's how that is made: after frying the bacon remove the meat from the pan, but leave the fat and juices behind. Then add to the pan......my goodness I can hardly bring myself to say it......then add to the pan............coffee!!!!! And you got yer gravy.

Please, anyone from the Southern States, can you confirm this abomination is true?

That said, I did take my m-i-l to Temple Bar market last weekend where we sampled chocolate covered bacon.

I am not far south by any means. I live in nearly the center of the US, but it is, in fact, a truth...I just recently learned about it myself. My brother told me about it...Coffee...in the gravy! I can't quite rap my own head around it, and I am at least from the US. haha

Now... at first thought, I actually grimaced at chocolate covered bacon...Now, however, I am simply imagining the sweet and salty blend and actually thinking I might like to try something as out of my norm as chocolate covered bacon. Weird? Interesting to have a bit of culture shock, though!

Yeah, Snot Head. Chocolate covered bacon. Another reason to visit Ireland!

Sorry I've not been in touch lately. Hope you're ok??!

My folks lived in the South, Cosmo, and I organized with some unions there and... yes this is true. Blessings to you as you sort it all out. Be well.

Thanks for the confirmation, RJ. (Cosmo shakes his head in disapproval).

Hope you're doing well!

Cosmo - I'm proud to say that I was born and raised in Alabama... and I have had biscuits and red-eye gravy at my Grandmothers on several occasions. I do have to say... it sounds awful, but it really is nice. I personally prefer biscuits and chocolate gravy (another real southern tradition).

Hey Cosmo. It is true. When I was living in New Orleans I worked in several restaurants. One time we offered "red eye gravy". We served it over ham and made it with coffee and raisins. Enjoy...

Oh dear, Wallace and Dave. I now can't decide if I should delete this whole post in an attempt to pretend that such a horrific abuse of coffee exits, or if I should seek out the red eye gravy next time I'm Stateside.
